The social event of the year.

 Moffat Beach Planting Day

This Sunday at 8am at Moffat Headland.

Roger has some plants for the continued beautification of Moffat Headland.

After all the not so hard work, some great food and drinks will be available.

Please make an effort.  The club has an excellent relationship with the Sunshine Coast Regional Council and we need to maintain this relationship.  It work both ways, some input from the members of the club and rewards from the Council in the form of grants to help our Club financially.  The latest was a $1300 grant to help with the cost of the Fun in the Sun and also to allow us to organize a “Come and try Day” at a later date.

 Fun in the Sun 2009

October 24th and 25th at Happy Valley was the place to be for the 9th Annual Fun in the Sun.  The club members really worked hard to make this year’s event one of the most successful yet. A big thanks to all the crew for their magnificent effort over the two days.

I won’t mention names just in case I miss anybody.   But to all those who organized the event, chased up sponsorship, served in the food tent all weekend, manned the coffee machine, cooked the BBQ, head judged all weekend (I did see him sneak off for a burger once), tallied all weekend, printed the raffle books, sold raffle tickets, arrived at 5am and helped set up and stayed back at the end of the day to pack up, THANKS A LOT.

The following 2 articles appeared in the Sunshine Coast Daily and sum up the spirit of the Fun in the Sun competition.

http://apn-images.adbureau.net/apn/accipiter/images/AE0.gifFOR the Coulter family, longboarding is more than just a sport.  It's a way of life.

Barry Coulter, 65, began surfing in the late 1950s on hollow plywood and sons Damian, 42, and Drew, 38, followed their father into the ocean two decades later.

The family now has four national titles between them and, when you include Damian's son Cody, 10, boasts three generations of pure surfing talent.

So when the Coulters teamed up for the ninth annual Fun in the Sun longboarding competition at Bulcock Beach on the weekend, it was a formidable line-up.

Not that they were taking their surfing too seriously.

“It's just a great competition,” Drew said.

“You get out there and you can have a good time with the family, from the youngest kids right through to the grandparents.

“It's a good excuse to have some fun in the sun which is what the comp's called.”

Damian Coulter said the surfing lifestyle summed up his family's philosophy.

“The whole idea is have a sort of soulful experience and feel at one with the ocean - and it's something you can bring your kids up on,” he said.

For Barry, it was the opportunity to compete with his sons and grandson that lured him to enter just his second competition of the year.

“The boys said 'what about doing the team event?',” he said.

“My initial thought was 'no, no' but then I gave it about two minutes and thought 'hey, it's the family… let's do it'.”

Fun in the Sun co-organiser and president of the Caloundra Malibu Club Mark Hughes said the competition was designed to be family-friendly.

“It's definitely a family thing, that really suits longboarding,” Hughes said.

“There's probably a few teams that have brothers or three sisters or fathers and daughters. You name it.”

Burleigh Board Culture took the title for the second year running, followed by Coulters Plus 1 and the Café by the Beach team over what Hughes said was a successful two days of top-quality competition.

“We had eight former Australian champions competing so it was a fantastic weekend. Good waves, great weather, a friendly crowd, the vibe was good and that's what we aim for.”

  Malibu Comp Fun for Family

Junior longboarder Beth Palmer’s attitude typifies what every surfer loves about the sport - just getting out there with your friends and having a fantastic time.

That’s probably why the 14 year old Dicky Beach surfer fits in so well at the Caloundra Malibu Club’s Fun in the Sun longboarding competition at Happy Valley over the weekend.

“It’s always good to get on the longboard and compete.” Beth said.

“But it’s also a good time to have some fun and meet new people too. I haven’t surfed Happy’s for a long time, so it’s great to come back and surf here with my friends.”

Beth, who surfed for the third placed Café by the Beach Team, said the competitions name described the experience perfectly. “It’s a great couple of days in the sun,” she said. “Like most mal comps, it’s pretty relaxed. Even if you don’t win you still have a great time with your friends and family.”

Although she has a relaxed approach to her surfing, Beth’s definitely no slouch on a malibu.

At the National Longboard Titles held at Port Macquarie in August, the Caloundra High School student finished third in the under 18’s girls section.

2009 Fun in the Sun Results

It was great to have 16 teams competing this year. Thanks to teams from Noosa, Alex and Burleigh clubs as well as our local crews.

After 3 rounds, the finalists for the A Final were - Café by the Beach, Coulters + 1, Noosa Classics and just scraping into 4th place Burleigh Board Culture.
The standard in the final was exceptional from teams that included 5 Australian champions, Australian finalists and numerous Queensland champions and finalists.

 October Comp

Managed to hold the comp in very small, high tide sliders at inside Moffs.

Surfing very close to the rocks, (actually dodging the exposed rocks), took its toll on boards and riders.

The board repairers loved it.

The first round was completed.  Some interesting results and with only one more comp, who will win the division prizes?

The club championship contenders surfed twice with the results safely locked away until the Presentation arvo.  The plan is to run two more heats at the next comp day.  The Club Champion will be decided on the results from those 4 heats.

The old mal continues to prove popular.  Steve Miller taking out the final and also taking out a much larger handicap next time.  Hope he enjoys the wine!

Jack Boast Memorial Junior Longboard Classic

Good luck to Kathryn, Jacqui, Cathy, Maddie, Laura and Sam as they try and win some of the highly prized titles up for grabs at the comp on Saturday 7th November at the Bluff at Alex.

Till next time.    Surf while you can!
